Mythological Research and Craft Beginnings

Ive been researching and building my mythological knowledge for a long while now. I’ve been focusing primarily on European and North African pantheons for the time being. The Ancient Egyptian pantheon is one which is close to my heart as I connect well with many of their deities in my practice as an eclectic witch.

I’m working on a couple of smaller projects to get going, one of which is an altar cloth for the goddess Maat (or Ma’at). The photo I’ve included is very early stages, with my outlines of the first embroidered section. Looking forwards to show you more later on!

I’m really enjoying exploring all the history, mythology and polytheistic pagan religions of the world. There are so many similarities, and yet they’re all unique with different points of view and ritual processes. I’m looking forwards to sharing all I’ve found through my craft, and potentially bring some of my own whimsy and magic into the world.

It’s a shame we’ve lost so much detail on what our ancestors practiced. The Ancient Egyptian pantheon for example has hundreds of deities. Sadly more than half are either very obscure or completely unknown, with just a few scriptures, depictions or mentions remaining. Some are so local we barely have much to work with, others have only ever had their name mentioned once (but we could extrapolate they were a deity due to the context).

This means we need to do a little reconstructive magic and energy connection to get a better view of their processes and who their deities were (but that will be a topic for another post!). In the meantime, enjoy this little sketch of scales from ancient Egypt. I’ll be working on a variety of items and post progress as I go.

  • Setting up for crafting

Setting up for crafting can sometimes be a bit of a journey, both financially and mentally. The scroll frame in this photo for example has a decent structure, but for some reason they had added loose PVC pipes as their method to ‘hold’ the fabric. I found this both frustrating and comical… As the structure…
